4G Networks – LTE Marches Onward

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project was formed as collaboration between telecoms companies to develop 3G mobile phone systems. Some of their developments have included LTE, or Long Term Evolution which bridges the gap between 3G and 4G mobile phone networks. Its primary purpose is to increase both the speed and the capacity of mobile phone networks.

Prototype LTE networks have been rolled out already. The first was in December 2009 which was opened by TeliaSonera in Scandinavia and encompassed the cities of Stockholm and Oslo. Rollout of LTE is anticipated in the USA and in Denmark in 2011.

LTE appears to offer significant economies of scale that differentiate it from previous network technologies as it is set to become the universal solution for mobile broadband as it can be used by both GSM and CDMA networks which previously were incompatible.

As an example of the universality of LTE, already there are 64 telecoms network providers operating in 31 countries who are planning on offering 4G based on this standard. The drive is to improve customer experience, to reduce the cost per megabit of data transfer, and to increase total revenue for the service providers.

That these providers see there are tremendous commercial potentials in LTE is exemplified by seeing hoe they view the market place. They view the target market as ‘on demand’ customers whose profile is using an iPhone (1.5 billion), making regular use of YouTube (100 billion), Yahoo users (245 billion) Google users (413 million at any instant). They estimate that by 2015 the number of books that will be downloaded daily into mobile phones or similar gadgets will be 6.3 billion and overall the demand on phone and other small gadget capacity will increase by 10,000%.

A further advantage of LTE is that 2G and 3G radio spectra can be re-used which will make implementation of LTE less than half the cost of 3G. The technology is also much greener that 3G as there will be energy savings of up to 55%. Also 70% less hardware will be required.

There remains little doubt that LTE will deliver a revolution in mobile phone services.

Nokia E5 – Most Affordable in Nokia’s E-Series

Nokia lovers among the budget conscious have every reason to take to the streets to celebrate a new E-series smartphone usually reserved for the younger corporate types. The new Nokia E5 takes in many features from its E63 predecessor as well as the highly praised E72 in a slighter thicker Blackberry-ish full QWERTY candybar with a sticker price that’s nearly half that of the E72. Find the best Nokia E5 deals online by comparing deals.

At €180 before taxes and subsidies, the E5 is Nokia’s most affordable handset in the E-series and could well be another Nokia success in the wings. And like most of its E-series phones, it comes in a bevy of colors to choose from. You get copper brown, silver grey, chalk white, sky blue or the standards carbon black. Take a look at all the phone offers online to find the ideal price for the E5.

Great Value

So what does €180 buy you? Check this out.

• The Nokia E5 sports a conventional 2.4-inch landscape TFT LCD display with QVGA resolution and 256k colors that has now passed on to many budget phones. But that doesn’t diminish its value a bit, though it loses the gorgeous 16million colors on the E72.
• As a smartphone, it runs the same Symbian v9.3 OS with Series 60 rel 3.2 UI on the same powerful ARM11 processor clocked at 600 MHz that the E72 uses. It even has the same 250 MB internal memory but expandable to 32 GB of external memory via microSD while the E72 can only read up to 16 GB. It even comes with a 2GB microSD card in the sales kit.
• In the imaging department, the Nokia E5 only loses the autofocus feature on the E72. But its 5 megapixel camera with LED flash enjoys one of the few fixed focus camera using EDoF (Extended Depth of Field) technology. So while two camera phones may have the same resolution, one with EDoF has the edge with clearer snapshots.
• The Nokia E5 is a 3G phone on the tri band UMTS (900 / 1900 / 2100) with versions for the North American markets and a quad band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) on 2G. Its data connectivity gets class 32 GPRS/EDGE of up to 296 Kbps on 2G while on 3G, it gets HSDPA at 10.2 Mbps and HSUA 2 Mbps.
• There’s hotspot support from its WiFi 802.11b/g with UPnP and DLNA for local data speed of up to 54 Mbps. It also comes with Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for high speed wireless and wired local data transfer, respectively
• You get SatNav functionality from its integrated GPS receiver with A-GPS support and comes preloaded with Ovi Maps3.4.
• Its multimedia comes across as typical with the usual stereo FM radio with RDS and media players for audio files in the MP3, WAV, WMA and eAAC+ formats as wells as video files in the MP4, H.263/H.264 and WMA video codecs.
• Its 1200 mAh Li-Ion BL-4D battery yields up to 8.5 hours of talk time on 2G, 705 hours of standby or up to 38 hours of music playback on a single charge. As well as looking for contract phones you can consider getting the Nokia E5 on Pay As You Go.

Mobile Phone Reviews

The HTC Desire is one of the hottest phones currently on the market and its popularity has led to shortages in stock levels. If you are planning to pick up a Desire with the intention of taking it abroad, then its roaming abilities should not disappoint. The Desire is compatible with the majority of international networking standards and its quad band compatibility means that it will operate well in both Europe and the USA. Selecting a network by hand or allowing the Desire to choose an appropriate foreign provider is open to preference and its simple, intuitive menu system with touch sensitive interactions should further simplify things.

The Samsung Tocco Lite is a popular entry-level smartphone that lacks the high end hardware of its more expensive peers, but still has the necessary software and connectivity tools to make it well equipped for use overseas. You will not have to alter any of its core settings for use when roaming, because by default it is set to seek out an appropriate foreign carrier when it is taken overseas. However, you can use its touch screen interface to make your own manual selection of a network, which may be useful if you know that your domestic provider has a roaming deal with a specific partner in your destination.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is not only an excellent smartphone powered by the Android platform, but it is also a suitably versatile travelling companion thanks to its quad band network connectivity and its ability to download at high speeds via HSDPA and 3G networks. The Xperia X10 has received critical appreciation for its roaming capabilities and you can set the phone to automatically choose a suitable alternative to your standard network provider if service is unavailable or you are out of the country with your phone. Alternatively you can use the wireless controls menu to manually select from a list of available providers.

The BlackBerry 8520 Curve is a smartphone specifically designed for the business user with fairly serious messaging requirements. Its full QWERTY keypad simplifies typing longer messages and it is optimised for email. Because the target audience will be expected to travel to different regions, the 8520 is a quad band compatible handset, which means that most international destinations will offer networks to which it can connect. The 8520 also boasts integrated wireless connectivity, which uses the universal Wi-Fi b and g standards, so internet connectivity for messaging, web browsing and email access is also possible no matter where you go.

The Nokia X6 is one of the Finnish manufacturer’s flagship smartphones and its generous 16GB of on-board memory means that it is a traveller’s dream. You can fill it with hours of music and video, allowing it to act as a multimedia hub for your time away. The X6’s touch screen display and intuitive menu system are coupled with the powerful Symbian operating system. As with all good smartphones, it is compatible with multiple network types, including 3G. It should be easy to automatically search for a partner network associated with your provider and to access most of the services that you can enjoy whilst at home.

Plain black, pink on white, and yellow on white are the three available colour schemes for the X6.

The X6 will be running on a 434-Mhz ARM processor combined with a 128-Megabyte RAM which guarantees smooth and silky navigation for the users. This powerful hardware combination also makes way for the awesome set of software packed into the X6. For the operating system, the X6 is equipped with the familiar Symbian mobile OS – version 9.4 is what’s on this device.
